Continue your Moroccan tour, moving from the fertile plains of northern and western Morocco to the arid desert scapes famous to many visitors. We will begin our travel after breakfast, going to the remote eastern town of Merzouga via Ifrane. We will stop in Ifrane near the lion statue, taking a chance to stretch our legs and enjoy the beautiful gardens in this city.
Our journey continues through a massive cedar forest, where we will have the opportunity to stop and see some friendly Barbary apes. We will traverse the Tiz Ntalghamt pass and Ziz Gorge, taking in views of the High Atlas plateau. Notice how the scenery changes to reveal hints of the desert as we approach the city of Errachidia. Here we will stop for lunch and enjoy the hospitality of the friendly Berber people.
After lunch, we will drive along the luxuriant Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views along the way to Erfoud and Rissani. You will arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon. Enjoy a welcoming glass of Moroccan mint tea before your checking into your riad for the evening.
Your guides will pick you up from the hotel at 9 a.m. to begin exploring Merzouga and the surrounding villages. The first stop is Khamlia, a village settled by freed Sudanese slaves who have lived in Morocco for several generations. Here, you will enjoy Gnawa music, featuring traditional spiritual songs and energetic dancing.
The journey continues off road as we drive behind the Erg Chebbi dunes, visiting remote desert villages, abandoned mines, and a nomadic Berber encampment. These welcoming nomadic families will invite us to share tea and explain their traditional way of life. After the visit, we return to Merzouga for lunch, where we highly recommend trying the traditional Berber pizza, filled with meat and vegetables and baked inside a bread crust over an open flame.
In the late afternoon, you will meet the dromedaries, one hump camels native to this region of Morocco, and set off on a ninety minute camel ride to the desert camp located in the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Standard and luxury camp options are available. Along the way, enjoy the sunset as it disappears behind the dunes, and try sandboarding if you wish. Upon arrival at the camp, relax with a glass of traditional mint tea, followed by dinner and live music. Your guides will play drums and castanets, filling the quiet desert with laughter and song.
Spend the night at the camp under the brilliance of the Milky Way, and take a moment to look up and admire the stars before settling in for the evening.
Wake up early to witness a breathtaking Sahara sunrise. After breakfast at the camp, ride your camel back to Merzouga or opt for a transfer by 4WD vehicle or ATV (ATV not included in the price). Our return journey begins with a stop in Rissani, known for its vibrant local market (live on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays). Explore the bustling souks filled with spices, handicrafts, and regional specialties. We then follow the Ziz Valley’s palm groves, pausing for panoramic views of this lush oasis stretching over 100 km. After a lunch break in Midelt, we travel through the cedar forests of Azrou, where you might catch another glimpse of the playful Barbary apes.
