The detailed itinerary for a 7-day Casablanca Sahara desert tour is given below. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to customize your desert tour. Morocco Sahara Desert Tours will plan the most unforgettable desert adventure for you.
Day 1: Casablanca airport – Marrakech
We will pick you up at the airport and take you to Casablanca before driving to Marrakech and dropping you off at your riad to rest and relax.
Day 2: Visit to Marrakech
After breakfast at the riad, your local city guide will meet you and take you on a tour of the old medina. Your Morocco Sahara Desert Tours driver will meet you at the end of your medina tour and accompany you to Majorelle Gardens. Explore the spectacular gardens with their unique, exotic flowers and take some time to enjoy this beautiful haven in the city. Following your visit to the gardens, we will spend the afternoon at Menara Gardens, which are located a few kilometers outside of the city. We’ll return to Marrakech for a late afternoon stroll through the medina after a short drive back to the old medina. Explore Jemaa el Fna, where the sounds of singers, the aromas of rich food and spices, and the sight of snake charmers will captivate you. This space, known as Morocco’s cultural crossroads, is teeming with amazing performers, delectable food, and one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Return to your riad near the main square after you’ve finished exploring and settle in for the evening.
Day 3: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
In the morning after breakfast, we will start our drive to the high Atlas Mountains and reach the summit of Morocco’s tallest mountain. You will have opportunities to stop for pictures as we travel the winding roads up the steep mountainside. Take in the breathtaking landscapes of the High Atlas Mountains and marvel at the traditional Berber houses perched on the edges of the mountains. After making our descent from the Atlas, you will watch the landscape change from rugged hilly terrain to the arid desert-scapes so famous to Moroccan imagery. We will visit the ancient fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and film location for movies like Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Babel. Walk the narrow, winding streets up to the granary at the top of the hill, and experience the gorgeous panoramic view of the village and the river next to it. We will have lunch in Ait Ben Haddou or nearby Ouarzazate, nicknamed the Moroccan Hollywood. Take a peek at the Atlas studio and visit the beautiful Taourirt Kasbah across the street.
Other places along our drive include:
- Skoura, whose defining features remain its mudbrick Kasbahs and vast UNESCO-protected palm groves, earning the moniker “Oasis of 1,000 Palms”.
- Kelaa M’Gouna, the rose city. There is an annual festival in May after the picking season in which they have an abundance of perfumes, soap, and cosmetics.
We will arrive in Boumalne Dades in the late afternoon and check into your hotel to rest and eat.
Day 4: Dades Valley – Todgha gorges – Merzouga
Begin your day by exploring Tinghir, a town on the eastern edge of the gorges. Here, a palm oasis unfolds like a lush umbrella under the canopy of trees. Travel with your guide to the Todgha gorges, passing through many beautiful oases and Berber villages until, 15 kilometers away, high walls of pink and grey rock close in around the road. Go on through the desert, passing through several villages before arriving in Erfoud. Berber miners are persistent in their quest for trilobite fossils, and Erfoud hosts an increasingly successful dance and music festival in October. We’ll stop in Erfoud for lunch and a visit to a miner’s shop to see the amazing discoveries made on the ancient seabed ( if interested). Merzouga, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is just a short drive from Erfoud. These huge dunes are the largest in Morocco, stretching 22 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, with some dunes reaching heights of over 150 meters. Relax and unwind for the evening, taking time to explore the dunes and admire the spectacular sunset in this peaceful desert setting. Before retiring for the evening, enjoy a delicious meal.
Day 5: Merzouga desert tour
At 9 a.m., a member from Morocco Sahara Desert Tours will meet and pick you up from your hotel for a Merzouga desert tour that includes visits to Merzouga and the surrounding villages. Our first stop will be in Khamlia, which is home to liberated Sudanese slaves who have lived in Morocco for generations. Listen to their spiritual songs, Gnawa music, and cheerful dance. We’ll take the tour off-road, passing through remote desert villages, abandoned mines, and a nomadic Berber encampment behind the Erg Chebbi dunes. These welcoming nomadic families will greet us with tea and an overview of their way of life. We’ll return to Merzouga for lunch after our tour; we recommend trying the traditional Berber “pizza,” which consists of meat and vegetables stuffed into a bread crust and cooked over an open flame ( we do picnics too in desert if the weather is calm and good if you are interested please tell us upon booking). You will be taken to the dromedaries—one-hump camels native to this region of Morocco—in the late afternoon and will travel for about 70 to 90 minutes to our camp in the middle of the Erg Chebbi dunes (standard or luxury camp options available). If you want, you can watch the sunset from behind the dunes and go dune sandboarding. Return for dinner, music, and a glass of traditional mint tea. Our guides will entertain you with drums and castanets, breaking the silence of the desert with laughter and singing around the campfire. You’ll retire to your camp for the night under the splendor of the Milky Way. Remember to look up to see the stars like you’ve never seen them before.
Day 6: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Azrou – Meknes
You’ll be awoken to a spectacular sunrise over the dunes, then have breakfast and prepare to travel from Merzouga to Meknes. We will stop at the Ziz Valley Palm Grove before driving to Midelt (Morocco’s Apple Capital). After lunch, we will drive to Azrou and stop at the Cedar Forest to see some Macaque monkeys before driving to Meknes. Before arriving at your riad, we will visit some attractions (Mansour’s Gate, Souani Basin). You’ll check into your riad to rest and unwind. Make the most of your stay in Meknes.
Day 7: Meknes – Casablanca airport/accommodation
After breakfast, we will drive back to Casablanca, which will take approximately 4 to 5 hours. If your flight is in the afternoon, we will drop you off at the airport or at your Casablanca hotel. Your 7-day Casablanca Sahara desert tour will come to an end here.
