Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga desert
Start your Moroccan adventure by traveling from the lush plains of northern and western Morocco to the well-known arid desert landscapes. After breakfast, we will depart for the remote eastern town of Merzouga via Ifrane. We’ll stop in Ifrane near the lion statue to stretch our legs and admire the city’s pretty gardens. Our adventure starts through a vast cedar forest, where we will be able to see some Barbary monkeys. We can go across the Tizi Ntalghamt pass and the Ziz Gorge, with views of the High Atlas plateau in between. As we enter the city of Errachidia, the landscape shifts to expose traces of the desert. We’ll have lunch here and enjoy the warmth of the welcoming Berber people. After lunch, we’ll take a scenic drive through the Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views along the way to Erfoud and Rissani. You’ll arrive in Merzouga late in the afternoon. Before checking into your riad for the evening, enjoy a refreshing glass of Moroccan mint tea.
Day 2: Tour of the Merzouga desert
Your guides will meet you at the hotel at 9 a.m. to take you on a tour of Merzouga and the nearby villages. Stop in Khamlia, the home of liberated Sudanese slaves who have been settling in Morocco for centuries. Listen to their Gnawa songs, spiritual music, and vibrant dances. We’ll go off-road, following the Erg Chebbi dunes to distant desert villages, abandoned mines, and a nomadic Berber encampment. These welcoming nomadic families will greet us with tea and an explanation of their way of life. We’ll return to Merzouga for lunch, and we strongly recommend trying the popular Berber “pizza,” which consists of meat and vegetables crammed into a bread crust and baked over an open flame. In the late afternoon, you will be taken to the dromedaries—one-hump camels native to this area of Morocco—for about 90-minute camel trip to our camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes (standard or luxury camp options available). If you like, you can watch the sunset from behind the dunes and go dune sandboarding. Back for dinner and music, as well as a drink of popular mint tea. Our guides will play drums and castanets for you, shattering the desert silence with laughter and singing around the campfire. You’ll retire to your camp for the evening under the dazzling light of the Milky Way. Remember to look up and see stars like you’ve never seen them before.
Day 3: Merzouga – Todgha Gorge – Boumalen Dades
Get up early to see the desert sunrise over Erg Chebbi’s dunes. After breakfast, we’ll ride dromedaries back into town. As we leave for Rissani, we bid farewell to the magnificent dunes. We’ll stop at the local market, which is brimming with dates, spices, and other Moroccan jewels, before continuing on to Erfoud and the spectacular Todgha Gorge. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch after a pleasant walk through the rock canyon.
After lunch, we’ll resume our journey to Boumalen Dades, admiring the stunning scenery and the kasbahs that line the mountains. Take plenty of photos as we wound our way through the winding roads, stopping for a panoramic view of the Dades Gorges. We’ll spend the night in a comfortable hotel at the canyon’s base.
Day 4: Skoura valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Marrakech
After breakfast, we will fly to Ouarzazate via the Skoura Valley and the rose city of Kelaa Mgouna. Our road through Skoura Valley is known as “the Path of a Thousand Kasbahs,” and it provides many chances to capture some of your trip’s best photos. We will have lunch at Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, Morocco’s biggest Kasbah. It was once a major thoroughfare for merchants delivering silver, salt, jewels, slaves, or other commodities from Sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech and Europe. The Kasbah is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cross the salty river , vast dry riverbed next to the village and make your way to the top of the hill through the small alleys. A panoramic view of the village can be viewed beside the old granary. We will travel to Marrakech after our visit in Ait Ben Haddou, watching the scenery change from flat desert land to hills and mountains. We can travel through the High Atlas Mountains, taking in panoramic views and charming Berber villages along the way, before we arrive in Marrakech. We will drop you off at your hotel, and the tour will end there.
