4-Day Round Trip Marrakech Sahara Desert Tour Itinerary

A captivating 4-Day Round Trip Marrakech Sahara Desert Tour through the Moroccan Sahara, featuring the Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, Merzouga dunes, camel trekking, and a night in a desert camp under the stars.

Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

After breakfast, we begin our journey toward the High Atlas Mountains, driving along scenic mountain roads to reach the summit near Morocco’s highest peak. Along the way, there will be several stops for photos as the road winds through steep slopes and stunning scenery. Enjoy sweeping views of the High Atlas landscapes and observe traditional Berber homes built into the mountainsides.

As we descend from the Atlas, the scenery gradually shifts from rugged hills to the dry, desert terrain that defines much of southern Morocco. Our next stop is the ancient fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous filming location for movies such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Babel. Stroll through its narrow alleyways up to the hilltop granary, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the village and the river below. Lunch will be in Ait Ben Haddou or nearby Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Morocco.” Here, you’ll see the Atlas Studios and visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah located just across the street.

During the drive, we also pass through several notable areas:

  • Skoura, known for its mudbrick kasbahs and expansive UNESCO-protected palm groves, often referred to as the “Oasis of 1,000 Palms.”

  • Kelaa M’Gouna, the Rose City, famous for its annual rose festival held each May after the harvest. We will stop at a local cooperative where you can sample and purchase rose oil, perfumes, soaps, and cosmetics.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Boumalen Dades, a historic trading crossroads for caravans traveling from Timbuktu to northern Morocco, reflected in its diverse kasbah architecture. After settling into your hotel or guesthouse, we head out to explore the Dades Canyon. Driving a few kilometers into the gorge, we’ll stop at scenic viewpoints to capture photos of the dramatic landscape, with its rust-red and mauve cliffs layered into striking rock formations. The area is popular with rock climbers and rappellers, and you’ll also notice traces of seasonal runoff used to irrigate the fertile valley below. The day concludes with a relaxing evening and dinner at your accommodation.

tart your day by exploring Tinghir, a town set on the eastern edge of the gorges. A wide palm oasis spreads out like a green umbrella, and beneath the palms you will find crumbling kasbahs and the abandoned 19th century Medersa Ikelane. North of the town, visit the ruins of Ksar Asfalou, a remarkable place where Muslim and Jewish students once studied together under the same roof.

Continue with your guide toward the Todgha Gorges, passing through lush palm groves and traditional Berber villages. About fifteen kilometers from Tinghir, towering walls of pink and grey rock rise dramatically around the road. The journey then continues deeper into the desert, crossing several villages before reaching Erfoud. This town is known for its fossil discoveries, as Berber miners search tirelessly for trilobite fossils. Erfoud also hosts a popular festival each October with music and dancing. We will stop here for lunch and visit a local fossil shop to see impressive finds from what was once an ancient seabed.

From Erfoud, it is a short drive to Merzouga, located at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. These are the largest dunes in Morocco, stretching twenty two kilometers long and five kilometers wide, with some dunes rising more than one hundred fifty meters high. Take time to relax, explore the dunes, and enjoy a stunning sunset in the peaceful desert surroundings. In the late afternoon, you will meet the dromedaries, one hump camels native to this region, and begin a ninety minute camel trek to your desert camp in the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes, with standard or luxury camp options available. Watch the sun set behind the dunes, try sandboarding if you wish, then arrive at camp for traditional mint tea, dinner, and live music. Your guides will play drums and castanets, filling the desert night with laughter and song.

Spend the night beneath the glow of the Milky Way and take a moment to admire the stars before settling into your camp.

Note. ATV rides on the dunes can be arranged upon request for guests who would like to explore further and take photos or videos. The ATV rental cost is not included in the tour price.

After enjoying breakfast at the camp and watching the sunrise over the dunes, we begin a full desert excursion to explore Merzouga and its surrounding villages. Our first stop is Khamlia, a village founded by freed Sudanese slaves who have lived in Morocco for generations. Here, you will experience traditional Gnawa music, with spiritual rhythms, singing, and energetic dancing.

The tour continues off road as we drive behind the Erg Chebbi dunes, visiting remote desert villages, abandoned mines, and a nomadic Berber encampment. These welcoming nomadic families will invite us in for tea and share insights into their traditional way of life. Afterward, we return to Merzouga for lunch, where we highly recommend tasting the traditional Berber pizza, filled with meat and vegetables and baked over an open fire.

For those interested, a dune ATV experience can be arranged, allowing you to explore the sand dunes by buggy or four wheeler. In the late afternoon, we return to the camp for your second night in the desert. Take time to walk the nearby dunes and enjoy another beautiful sunset. You may also try sandboarding on the dunes if you wish. As evening falls, relax with a glass of traditional mint tea, followed by dinner and live music. Our guides will play drums and castanets, filling the desert with laughter and song.

Spend the night at the camp under the glowing Milky Way, and be sure to look up and enjoy the incredible night sky before settling in for the evening.

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, then enjoy breakfast at the camp. After packing your luggage, you can choose to return to the village of Merzouga by camel or by 4×4 vehicle.

We then begin the journey back to Marrakech, taking a different route from Merzouga to Ouarzazate so you can experience new landscapes and villages along the way. From Ouarzazate, we continue through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass.

This will be a long travel day, covering the full distance between Merzouga and Marrakech, with several stops along the way to stretch, take photos, and enjoy meals. In the evening, we will drop you off at your riad or hotel in Marrakech, where your desert tour with us comes to an end.
