Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga desert
Continue your Moroccan adventure by traveling from the fertile plains of northern and western Morocco to the well-known arid desert landscapes. After breakfast, we will depart for the remote eastern town of Merzouga via Ifrane. We’ll stop in Ifrane near the lion statue to stretch our legs and enjoy the city’s beautiful gardens. Our journey continues through a massive cedar forest, where we will be able to see some Barbary apes. We will travel through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass and the Ziz Valley, with views of the High Atlas plateau in between. As we approach the city of Errachidia, the scenery changes to reveal hints of the desert. We’ll have lunch here and enjoy the hospitality of the welcoming Berber people. After lunch, we’ll take a scenic drive through the Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views along the way to Erfoud and Rissani. You’ll arrive in Merzouga late in the afternoon. Before checking into your lodge for the evening, enjoy a refreshing glass of Moroccan mint tea.
Day 2: Tour of the Merzouga desert
Your guides will meet you at the hotel at 9 a.m. to take you on a tour of Merzouga and the surrounding villages. Stop in Khamlia, the home of set free Sudanese slaves who have been settling in Morocco for generations. Listen to their Gnawa music, spiritual songs, and lively dancing. We’ll go off-road, following the Erg Chebbi dunes to remote desert villages, abandoned mines, and a nomadic Berber encampment. These welcoming nomadic families will greet us with tea and an explanation of their way of life. We’ll return to Merzouga for lunch, and we highly recommend trying the traditional Berber “pizza,” which consists of meat and vegetables stuffed into a bread crust and cooked over an open flame.
In the late afternoon, you will be taken to the dromedaries—one-hump camels native to this region of Morocco—for about 90-minute camel ride to our camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes (standard or luxury camp options available). If you want, you can watch the sunset from behind the dunes and go dune sandboarding. Return for dinner and music, as well as a glass of traditional mint tea. Our guides will entertain you with drums and castanets, breaking the silence of the desert with laughter and singing. You’ll fall asleep to your camp for the evening under the dazzling light of the Milky Way. Remember to look up and see stars like you’ve never seen them before.
Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Ziz valley – Midelt – Azrou – Fes
Wake up to see the incredible sunrise over the dunes, then begin the journey back to civilization (by dromedary, ATV, or car). After packing, you will depart for Fez, making stops along the way. First, we’ll travel to Rissani to check out the bustling market (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays). We’ll take the road to Aoufous and the Ziz Valley. Thousands of date palm trees line the valley’s length of more than 100 kilometers. Morocco produces some of the world’s best dates. We’ll continue to Midelt for lunch before making a quick stop in Azrou, a market town at the crossroads of roads to Fez, Meknès, Midelt, and Khenifra. Deep in the Middle Atlas, it is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, with sweeping views of cedar and pine forests and high meadows that bloom every spring. You might even see some of the friendly local Barbary apes. Our journey will take us to Fes, an imperial city with relics of its illustrious past. Finish the day’s tour in the comfort of your hotel or Riad.
