The following is a complete itinerary for a three-day Sahara desert tour from Fez to Marrakech. If you have any questions or would like to tailor your desert tour, please contact us. Morocco Sahara Desert Tours will create the most memorable desert journey for you.
Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga desert
Continue your Moroccan adventure by traveling from the lush plains of northern and western Morocco to the well-known arid desert landscapes. After breakfast, we will depart for the remote eastern town of Merzouga via Ifrane. We’ll stop in Ifrane near the lion statue to rest our legs and admire the city’s lovely gardens. Our adventure starts through a vast cedar tree, where we will be able to see some Barbary monkeys. We can go across the Tizi Ntalghamt pass and the Ziz Gorge, with views of the High Atlas plateau in between. As we enter the city of Errachidia, the landscape shifts to expose traces of the desert. We’ll have lunch here and enjoy the warmth of the welcoming Berber people. After lunch, we’ll take a scenic drive through the Ziz Valley, stopping for panoramic views along the way to Erfoud and Rissani. You’ll arrive in Merzouga late in the afternoon. In the late afternoon, you will be taken to the dromedaries, which are one-hump camels native to this area of Morocco, for a 60 to 90-minute camel trip to our camp in the middle of the Erg Chebbi dunes (standard or luxury camp options available). If you like, you can watch the sunset from behind the dunes and go dune sandboarding. Return for dinner and music, as well as a glass of local mint tea. Our guides will entertain you with drums and castanets, breaking the silence of the desert with laughter and singing. You’ll retire to your camp for the evening under the dazzling light of the Milky Way. Take the time to look up and see stars like you’ve never seen them before.
Day 2: Merzouga – Todgha Gorge – Boumalen Dades
Get up early to see the desert sunrise over Erg Chebbi’s dunes. After breakfast, we’ll ride dromedaries back into town. As we leave for Rissani, we bid farewell to the magnificent dunes. We’ll stop at the local market, which is brimming with dates, spices, and other Moroccan jewels, before continuing on to Erfoud and the breathtaking Todgha Gorge. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch after a lovely walk through the rock canyon. After lunch, we’ll resume our journey to Boumalen Dades, admiring the stunning scenery and the kasbahs that line the mountains. We’ll pause and look at a rock formation called Monkey’s Fingers, and you can decide whether or not it resembles the fingers of a monkey. Take plenty of photos as we wound our way through the twisting lanes, stopping for a panoramic view of the Dades Gorges. We’ll spend the night in a pleasant hotel at the canyon’s base.
Day 3: Skoura valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Marrakech
After breakfast, we will travel to Ouarzazate via the Skoura Valley and the rose city of Kelaa Mgouna. Our road through Skoura Valley is known as “the Path of a Thousand Kasbahs,” and it provides many chances to capture some of your trip’s best images. We will have lunch at Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, Morocco’s biggest Kasbah. It was once a major thoroughfare for merchants bringing silver, salt, jewels, slaves, or other commodities from Sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech. The Kasbah is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cross the salty river or large dry riverbed next to the village and make your way to the top of the hill through the small alleys. A panoramic view of the village can be found next to the old granary. We will travel to Marrakech after our stay in Ait Ben Haddou, watching the scenery change from flat desert land to hills and mountains. We will travel through the High Atlas Mountains, with panoramic views and charming Berber villages along the way, before we arrive in Marrakech, where you will be dropped off at your riad in the city’s historic medina.
